Causes of Addiction

The are causes of drug addiction, and it's not just lack of will power. There are actual reasons people become addicted to drugs. The psychiatric aspect of addiction to drugs can be very powerful. Our brains(neurological) and our minds(what we think about) are very complex. The brain undergoes changes during substance abuse and will have an effect on what we think about. But the thoughts we have could have been the primary motivator for the abuse in the first place, which sets forth a cycle that started as psychological and then to a physical addiction. Making our thinking patterns the rulers of our lives.

Since we are these complex beings with the capabilities of thinking and reasoning, we often forget to give credit to what a big part thought conditions, either conscious or subconscious, play in our lives. We often discount the mind as just a small part of who we are. Nothing could be further from the truth. The psychiatric implications of drug use are always there and can wreak havoc in the lives of someone with an alcohol or drug addiction.

What we're talking about

What exactly are we talking about? The psychiatric aspects of the mind and how our mind can control our lives is something mental professionals have known about for a long time now. Now it's time you learn for yourself.

For example, if you are the child of an addict, and whether it be a pot-head parent or an alcoholic parent, your mind begins to justify your own marijuana use or alcohol use as being alright. After all, if your parents are doing it, it can't be all that bad for you, right? Well, that is what your mindset becomes.

Drugs effect the brain

Drugs also have an effect on the brain. It is a proven, scientific fact that addiction is a brain problem and the American Psychiatric Association has proven this. When you start using drugs, your brain gets used to having that drug around. When it is not present, your mind starts "talking" to you and you believe what it says, and that you must have that drug to function.

What can you do to try and beat the psychiatric effects of drug addiction? The best answer to that question is, get some help. That means talking to a counselor or health professional about your addiction and asking about ways for you will be able to overcome the addiction.

There are lots of programs available to people who are dealing with drug and alcohol addiction. Programs that will treat the mind and body, in order to ease you through any withdrawal symptoms that occur when you go off the drug. With professional help, you will be able to successfully conquer the hold that drug addiction has on you, your life, and your mind.

It's not absolutely necessary that you have to enter a rehab facility, but when you contact a psychiatrist or psychologist be sure to find one that is trained in in substance abuse cases. Although, you may find you will find better results with your therapist after you've been through rehab. Rehab facilities can be expensive and so can psychiatrists, but once you realize that you need outside help, you will be better able to get on happily, with your drug-free life.

Get Support

Just admitting that there is a problem is only half of the solution. The next step is to get support.

You must show caution if you're physically addicted, it could be dangerous just to quit "cold-turkey", especially coming off alcohol or tranquilizers. A doctor may be able to prescribe medication to help you through early withdrawal, even if abrupt stoppage isn't dangerous.

The popular image of a person giving up drugs usually focuses on the immediate effects of withdrawing from heroin. It's important to remember that there's often more to an addiction than the physical withdrawal symptoms. This is why continued treatment in after-care is needed after the physical symptoms seem to be gone. By learning about psychological "triggers" you will be better equipped to overcome cravings that could result in a re-laps.

If you really don't know where to turn to find drug addiction counseling, go online and search the Internet. There are many, many places that offer online counseling for drug problems that can address your own addiction as well as many others. The advantage of a community like this is that you are completely anonymous and you are speaking with others who are in various stages of their own recovery. They can help you, and, perhaps, you can help them too!

Drug addiction counseling is very important when you decide it's time to kick your drug habit. If you try to do it alone, you'll be lacking a very important part of recovery. You need to treat both your mind and your body. When you take steps to get drug addiction counseling, you'll be doing yourself a favor and your recovery will be much, much easier!
